I business luncheoned with my wife recently and found the food Superb and good sized portions, excellently priced and rapidly served, the real ale was crystal clear, It was a lovely pub to visit with very friendly staff who were well informed on their real ales too. Definately going back

Heard: You're a moron. You're judging the entire pub on a soggy potato.
The food I had was great, the people are friendly and there's never any trouble here. And no chavs!

This is the second worst pub I've visited. The roasts were 'orible. Almost raw processed veg and rubber meat served with soggy potatoes. .....The yourshires were okay! Take my advice... go find a grubby Mcdonalds

To disgruntled. If you dont like the place that much drink somewhere else. Its not like there is a shortage of pubs in colchester. Personally the few times ive been there ive had a good night and found everyone to be quite pleasant.

Bernie, you should have a drink there now. It's been smartened up no end and has a great selection of real ale. Its changed a lot in five years.

My Gradmother and Grandfather used the pub in the 40s 50s and 60s. I lived in St Mary's road until 63. The road has gone and there is a car park. The place was a dump then an I had a beer their 5 years ago and it was still a dump.

I knew it wouldn't take long for the pub to go downhill after the management change over. Since the refurb and Luke's departure the place has turned seriously unwelcoming. The new management priorities seem soley based on removing the regulars. The treatment we have received over the last week has been beyond appauling and i'm sure we wouldn't have been spoken to in that manner had we been their "target market". It seems that the once friendly chef has gone mad with power since his promotion to management and turned into a sanctimonious dictator trying to exhile his once-friends.

The food is nice and the staff are friendly, apart from the short girl with the oddly coloured hair.

LONG LIVE THE HOLE IN THE WALL! awesome place, just had the beer festival which i believeends tonight - some great ranges of beer available and friendly staff, a very welcoming environment, its been changed since many of these reviews were left, but im liking this version better actually, still got similarrr people but the atmosphere is more casual and still great fun!

So ok, most of the reviews about the hole in the wall are waaaaay out of date now. Since it has been bought by "The James pub company" it has been refurbed, they now serve food and the choice of ale and beer is alot better. The staff are friendly and welcomming. All in all alot nicer.
