Located 15 minutes by car from the historic Essex town of Colchester, Tiptree has achieved worldwide fame for its preserves. A visit to the museum, tea room and jam shop will take up to two hours and there are plenty of things to do in and around the area, so why not make a day of it? The Tiptree Museum is open from 10 am until 5 pm Mondays to Saturdays, admission is free.
In June, July and August you are welcome to visit on Sundays too, 12-5pm
Over 50 years ago, John Wilkin began collecting the paraphernalia of preserve making and Essex village life. In quiet corners of the preserve factory he carefully stored away pictures, documents and redundant machines.
With the opening of the museum in a renovated farm building at Tiptree, John Wilkin's foresight was at last rewarded. Visitors can see how life used to be and how the art of preserve-making has advanced over the years at Tiptree.
