The staff are very scruffy and do not have much get up and go,more like got up and gone.........!!!
My carpaccio starter was a let down, the watercress had not been washed properly and was all gritty. The rest of the meal was fantastic though and my wife and I really did enjoy the food.
The prices are a little far fetched, especially when your have to go to the bar to order your food and for a round of drinks etc....
Overall you need to work on your waiting staff for the prices to be good, but your food is top notch.

I’m not a big fan of this place, after eating here several times with family (not my choice!)
First of all you will notice that the waitresses are very scruffy, they really need to be smarter for the sort of bistro pub this place holds itself to be.
The food is very very overpriced, the vegetarian selection is terrible and when I last came (I had a goats cheese salad) there was one HUGE lump of goats cheese and the most pathetic “salad” you have ever seen – I paid £10 for something I ate in about two mouthfuls! And this was a main course! And the time before that I had my hot dessert so overcooked my fork wouldn’t go through the sponge!!
Its one of these “the less is on you plate, but the higher its piled up, the more you pay” sort of places.
On the plus side they do care for young kids quite well compared to other bistro pubs.
Not a huge fan of the sort of people that eat and drink in there though, made me feel very unwelcome and "lower class" even though i was dressed perfectly normally.
I would eat here if I wasnt paying but there are MUCH better restaurants in/around Colchester if you are parting with cash!

We arrived at the crown on the Sunday following Christmas at 12.15, we had been walking so were a little muddy and nine of us in total. We found a table ordered a large variety of dishes, the food came quickly despite the size of our (unbooked) party. It was all really hot and well presented, the haddock won particularly high praise. We were made to feel really welcome and stayed at our table without any incouragement from the staff to move on despite it being really busy. The local Maldon ale was also really good, Oh and we like many other parties, had children with us and they were made to feel welcome.
